To get straight to the point: Qisma is HeKz’s magnum opus. Matt Young, the driving force behind the band, has surpassed himself with this album. Qisma is simply a masterpiece and a beautiful concept album. It tells the story of the protagonist Qisma, her escape from Kybagrad, and the battle with the Overlord, doing so through a series of short and very long songs.

Matt Young, although being the composer, did not create this album alone; his band made a huge contribution to it. And not just any contribution: this HeKz lineup is the best that has ever existed. Alongside Matt Young, Lucia La Reza and Tolis Zavaliaris play a leading role. Lucia’s violin conveys pure emotion, while the technique and power of Tolis’s guitarwork turn every track into a gem. Drummer Jerry Sadowski also shines on this record: technically brilliant, full of power, and entirely at the service of the songs. Jerry has since been replaced in the live band by the brilliant James Wise . Additionally, this album features guest contributions from Dutch guitar virtuoso Mark Bogert and keyboard hero Adam Holzman. That Matt Young is a musical lover shines through on this album. It is a story with many chapters that continue to captivate, supported by rock-solid compositions and beautiful lyrics. Everything is masterfully produced. Moreover, Matt sings better than ever; he has now completely found his voice. Nothing sounds forced; from low to high, he handles it all with equal ease.

A very special contribution in the song 'Overlord' comes from John Mitchell (known from Lonely Robot and Arena). John sings like I have never heard him sing before; he truly moves with his voice. The lyrics are tailor-made for him, and I hope he maintains this sound in his own work as well. John also co-produced and mixed the album. And you can hear it; he remains a master of his craft.
You need to take your time for this album. It consists of two CDs with a huge amount of great music. Really sit down and enjoy it to the fullest, because this is the future of prog and prog metal. HeKz is and remains a unique band. Sometimes they are too metal for prog, and sometimes too prog for metal, but whatever your preference: this will appeal to every lover of top-notch music. Whereas the previous album was mainly Matt Young with guest musicians, this album showcases a band at the absolute peak of their abilities.
Qisma will share the no1 position of my Top 10 of 2026!
