I saw Wilson Project, a young Italian progressive rock band, for the first time in Italy. And that turned out to be a big and positive surprise. Great music, excellent instrumental mastery, and a singer, Annalisa Ghiazza, with a beautiful and very distinctive voice. The four members have a solid musical background and are enthusiastically making their mark. Wilson Project immersed themselves thoroughly in the work of the great Italian prog bands, and you can hear that reflected in their music. They know their classics. Their latest album, Atto Prima, is a tribute to opera and reinterprets its theatricality and emotional intensity. Each song is dedicated to a famous opera and composer. You can hear the Italian opera tradition reflected in the music, but in a style entirely their own. All lyrics are in Italian, and I prefer that to a singer who speaks broken English. The compositions possess that typical melodic Italian quality. Besides Annalisa Ghiazza, the band consists of the excellent keyboardist Andrea Protopapa, who is so good that you absolutely do not need a guitarist. What a class act this still-young giant is. Furthermore, there is the very melodic bassist Stefano Rapetti and the fine, solid drummer Matia Pastorino. With their qualities, compositional ability, and a sound all their own, Wilson Project delivers a fantastic album. So young (in their twenties) and already achieving this, wow! This band is going to be big. A must for all lovers of that typically Italian dramatic and super melodic prog!
